January 2007

Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:” Ephesians 1:2-4

A new year has begun and as always, individuals will resolve to accomplish many projects and overcome many vices.  We want to be better people.  We want to prosper.  We want our hearts’ desires to be met.  We want, we want, we want…  Some of us who walk with the Lord ask God to bless us, but we never stop to think about what is required of us to receive His blessings.

We ask Him to bless us with the essential things in life, and oftentimes ask Him to ‘bless’ us with things that are frivolous and insignificant.  We seek Him for things we have the power to acquire ourselves then presume He will answer these requests immediately as if He were a genie who will snap his fingers to make all our wants and desires magically appear for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth Deuteronomy 8:18.  When we don’t receive what we ask for (or we don’t receive it within the time frame we feel we should receive it) we question whether He has heard us, doubt His love for us, or sometimes whether He even exists.   This should not be so…

God desire is to ‘bless us’, but there are certain conditions we must meet.  Deuteronomy 28:1, 2 states:  “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:  And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.”

We must abide by, and carry out his commandments so we will receive God’s blessings.  Society would have us believe this is impossible; but with God’s spirit living, dwelling, and moving within each of us, we can do what He wants us to do, and be what he wants us to be.

                 Deuteronomy 28 further tells us:

▪                we will be blessed in the city and blessed in the field

▪                the fruit of our bodies and the increase of our families will be blessed

▪                our work and businesses (the fruit of our ground, cattle, sheep, our baskets, our store) will be blessed

▪                we’ll be blessed when we come in and blessed when we go out

▪                our enemies that rise up against us will be smitten.

Isn’t this awesome!  What more could we want…  The LORD will establish us an holy people unto himself if we will keep His commandments and walk in His ways. (Deuteronomy 28: 3-9)  We want to obtain the blessings of Abraham; but to obtain them we must, as he did, ‘patiently endure to receive the blessings of God’ (Hebrews 6:13-15).

The year ahead will be filled with happiness, new possibilities, difficulties, and even sorrow.  Will we be able to endure all we will encounter?  Will we be obedient to the Word of God?  Will we cave in to the first obstacle that comes our way?  Will we be overcomers?  We must believe God can and will ‘bless us’ in whatever situation we find ourselves.  The choice to live in this belief, is ours…

Find comfort in God’s promises and ‘walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory’ (1 Thessalonians 2:12).  No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11). You don’t have to question if God want to bless you.  Know within your heart He is already blessing you and that he desires to do more.  Commit your life to Him and watch as he showers blessings upon your life.  Yes, God is still in the blessing business.  Live in Him and you will see!
